Rear Dump Trailer Hydraulic System: Cylinder Geometry, Power Supply and Quote Scope

  • Selecting a hydraulic cylinder for a rear dump trailer requires more than matching a cargo capacity printed in a brochure. The cylinder works within a particular body, hinge and mounting arrangement, and it receives power from a defined hydraulic system. Those parts need to form a compatible package.

For a new trailer, ask the supplier to identify the complete tipping system. For a replacement, begin with the installed cylinder and vehicle records. A new design enquiry and a like-for-like parts request need different information.

Make the Body Drawing the Starting Point

The body geometry, load positions, rear hinge and cylinder mounting arrangement influence the tipping-system assessment. Two trailers with the same stated cargo capacity can have different bodies and cylinder requirements. Give the supplier the proposed body dimensions and cargo information rather than treating a tonnage label as a complete cylinder specification.

The technical proposal should identify the weights, positions and operating conditions considered by the designer. Ask which drawing revision supports that proposal. Hyva's tipper information notes that cylinder specification sheets contain dimensional and application information. For the actual order, obtain the corresponding data for the cylinder and body arrangement being supplied, not a datasheet for a similar-looking cylinder.

Information Needed for a Complete Tipping Proposal

    System elementWhat should be identified
Body and rear hingeThe relevant drawing, geometry, weight assumptions and intended material.
CylinderManufacturer, designation, mounting arrangement and applicable technical data.
Power supplyThe tractor equipment or other specified power source used by the system.
Pump and control equipmentThe supplied component designations and compatibility assessment.
Tank, filtration and pipeworkThe installation scope, component list and applicable requirements.
Operating documentationThe instructions and limits for the complete supplied arrangement.

Read Cylinder Dimensions as a Set

The stroke describes cylinder travel, while other dimensions describe the cylinder in its specified positions and its mounting interfaces. None of these should be selected in isolation. The cylinder must correspond with the intended body movement and the actual mounting structure.

Request the designation and drawing instead of specifying only the number of telescopic stages or an approximate outside diameter. If the supplier offers an alternative, ask how it fits the same body and hydraulic system. The appropriate technical personnel should assess the change. An alternative that appears physically similar may have different interfaces, operating requirements or application limits.

Identify the Tractor's Role in the Power Supply

Some proposals require hydraulic equipment on the tractor, while others use a separately specified power arrangement. The quotation should make this clear. If the tractor supplies power, provide its configuration and the available information about the installed hydraulic equipment and connections.

A fleet using several tractors needs to know which of them can operate the supplied system. List the intended combinations and ask the supplier to identify compatibility requirements or missing information. Do not leave this question until the trailer arrives. Equipment included with the trailer, equipment required on the tractor and items excluded from the order should appear as separate entries in the quotation.

Compare a Cylinder Offer With a Complete System Offer

A price for a cylinder is not necessarily a price for a working tipping package. A complete proposal may also involve mounting equipment, a pump, control equipment, a tank, filtration, hoses, connections and other components required by the design. Hyva's tipping-solutions range illustrates these separate component groups within hydraulic tipping systems.

Ask for an itemized list rather than assuming that the phrase hydraulic system includes everything. Record the manufacturer and designation where component identification is important to maintenance and replacements. Compare the supplied scope across offers. If one quotation excludes the tractor equipment or installation accessories, its lower price should not be interpreted as the same package at a discount.

Do Not Use a Pressure Number as a Compatibility Check

A quoted pressure figure is one item of technical information. The equipment designations, performance requirements and installation conditions still need to be compatible. Ask the supplier to identify the applicable system data and how the proposed components have been selected together.

The procurement enquiry should not prescribe pressure changes, control modifications or operating settings. Those belong to the approved design and manufacturer instructions. A cylinder selection also does not establish that the complete vehicle is stable for every material or site condition. The body, vehicle combination, cargo and tipping location require the appropriate assessment and trained operation.

Use Identification, Not Appearance, for a Replacement

For a replacement request, photograph the component identification and provide the trailer identity, existing drawings and relevant installation records. Include the workshop's findings if a fault prompted the request. State whether the order concerns the cylinder alone, associated mounting equipment or a larger assembly.

Keep replacement selection separate from a redesign. Changing the cylinder, mounting geometry or power supply can affect the complete system and should be assessed accordingly. The supplier needs a clear description of the existing installation and the proposed change. A request based only on color, stage count or a vehicle's advertised payload leaves too many important questions unanswered.

    Agree the Documents Before Production

The approved body drawing, hydraulic equipment list and relevant technical data should describe the same revision of the trailer. Check that the agreed power supply and included accessories appear in the final specification. If an equipment substitution is proposed during production, obtain a recorded technical review instead of relying on an informal statement that it is equivalent.

At handover, keep the operating and maintenance information with the vehicle record. The fleet should be able to identify its cylinder and other components without dismantling equipment to discover what was supplied. This helps future parts enquiries and makes it easier to distinguish a support question from a request to alter the original design.

    Cylinder and Power-Supply Questions

Can the same cylinder be specified for every trailer with the same payload label?

No. The body, load assumptions, mounting geometry and hydraulic system must be considered. Use the component designation and the technical assessment for the specific arrangement.

Does the cylinder's price include a complete hydraulic system?

Only if the quotation explicitly includes that scope. Request a component list and identify any tractor equipment, accessories or installation work that are excluded.

Ask GENRON for an itemized tipping-system proposal. Provide the body, cargo and tractor information. Request the cylinder designation, complete component list and a clear statement of the hydraulic power supply included in the offer.
