Semi Trailer Landing Gear Buying Guide: Capacity, Mounting and Selection

  • Landing gear selection involves both load information and installation dimensions. A set with a suitable rating can still have the wrong mounting height, insufficient travel or a handle that cannot be operated around nearby equipment. Start by separating the ratings, then compare the complete installation.

Lifting Capacity and Static Test Load Are Not the Same

Lifting capacity relates to raising a load under the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions. Static test load is a different stated test condition. As a manufacturer-specific example, JOST lists a 24 t lifting capacity and a 50 t static test load per set for MODUL B. Those are JOST MODUL B figures, not ratings for the GENRON legs pictured here. They illustrate why a buyer should not read a static test figure as the normal lifting capacity, or confuse a per-set figure with a per-leg figure.

Compare the Working Heights With a Drawing

Check the mounting position, retracted dimensions and available extension. The relevant heights come from the trailer’s actual coupling and parking arrangements. A photograph of a leg cannot show whether it will fit beneath a different chassis or leave enough clearance when retracted. For replacement, send the existing model identification and mounting dimensions rather than ordering solely by a capacity label.

Feet and Operating Access Are Part of the Selection

Foot designs differ, and their approved applications should be checked with the quoted model. Describe the parking surface and the operator’s support procedure. Also show the crank side and the space around spare wheel carriers, frame members or other accessories. The chosen arrangement needs to fit the trailer and give the operator access without interference. Unsuitable ground conditions cannot be solved simply by choosing a higher nominal rating.

    Define What “A Set” Includes

Ask whether the quotation includes both legs, feet, connection shaft, handle and the specified mounting or bracing items. Supply packages differ. JOST’s modular catalogue, for example, identifies components that can be ordered separately. The receiving check should compare the quoted assembly with the delivered items before installation. Keep the model and parts information with the vehicle record so a later replacement does not depend on a photograph alone.

    Measurements and Photos to Send

    • Trailer model and existing landing gear marking.

    • Mounting drawing or measured installation dimensions.

    • Required operating heights and available crank space.

    • Parking conditions and the requested supply scope.

    A Common Rating Question

Can I use the static test load as the lifting rating?

No. Read the separate ratings and their definitions for the exact model. A test figure is not approval to lift that load in normal operation.

    Sources and Application Notes

The MODUL B figures above are taken from JOST’s own technical data per set. Use the documentation for the actual model quoted or fitted.

Request a landing gear set from GENRON. Send the model marking, installation dimensions and required included parts so the proposal describes a complete, identifiable set.
